March 15, 2008: Markets and Marketing, Taipei
This day provided insight information into leading and potential markets and marketing concepts. With 20 million e-bikes sold in 2007, China is still the world's No 1 LEV market. India is an emerging place for all kinds of electric vehicles. Europe is on a constant rise with the Netherlands taking a clear lead. Spain offers potential with its huge tourism business. Testing, and classifying the results by target groups, industry standards and rental systems were major topics.
March 16, 2008: Technology and Standards, Taipei
Experts introduced the latest achievements of battery and fuel cell technology, battery transport regulations, and the BATSO battery safety standard. It became obvious that an industry standard such as EnergyBus will make it a lot easier to implement new energy storage systems into LEVs. No wonder that quite a few lectures provided a closer look at the plug family, CANopen protocol and energy management of EnergyBus. The prototype of an automated battery rental system showed that such standards are absolutely necessary for the practical use of a public charging infrastructure.
Table Presentations, Taipei
The conference sponsors - Welldone, EXA, and PHET - exhibited their electric components such as batteries, motors, sensors, chargers, human interface devices, electronics, and plugs in a table presentation next to the entrance of the conference room in Taipei. During the LEV party in the evening of March 15th, the components were presented in the middle of the room and caught a lot of attention––besides the food sponsored by Welldone.
Test Rides, Taipei
During the entire time of Taipei Cycle Show (March 13-16, 2008) the ExtraEnergy TEST IT Track was set up for the Conference audience and show visitors to test ride electric bikes and scooters. The test course included a 100 meter long drive-up, which clearly demonstrated the advantages of an electric motor in uphill conditions. The track also served as a setting for TV filming. A Taiwanese TV program for children reported about electric bikes and how much fun they are.
March 17, 2008: EnergyBus Workshop, Hsinchu
This day started with lectures on the current status of EnergyBus, cooperation projects, possible applications, and technical aspects. Lateron, the participants discussed the requirements for EnergyBus plugs, details of the energy management, and CANopen specifications of the protocol in small groups. The industry more and more regards the development of EnergyBus standard as an important condition for further market growth.
March 18, 2008: BATSO Workshop, Hsinchu
On this day the BATSO 01 Manual was released and the project reached an important milestone on the way towards safer batteries used in LEVs. 44-page document was presented to industry representatives in detail. On a guided tour, the testing laboratory was shown to the participants. Within the next few months, this testing lab will be modified in a way that BATSO tests can be executed to full extend.
March 19, 2008: Workshop on EnergyBus Plug and Standard Battery Systems for Rental Services, Hsinchu
Speeches and discussions were dedicated to public charging infrastructure for electric bikes and scooters. Rental systems and charging stations are nothing new, but earlier attempts failed mostly due to the lack of a common standard. Such an industry standard enables products of different manufacturers to be part of the system or to upgrade to later battery technologies. A major topic was the security of such a system. The prototype of a battery vending machine served as an example to discuss ways and extend of suitable protection.
